Why Is My AC Leaking Water?

water-dropletsAs the hot months of summer in Brighton keep getting hotter, your air conditioner is most likely going to be working overtime to keep your home cool and comfortable. If you have had your air conditioner for a long time, you must have faced several issues over the years that require repairs. One fairly common issue that people face with their cooling systems is an inexplicable water leak from their ACs.

If your air conditioner is leaking water, you might be confused about why that’s happening and if you need to do anything about it. We will discuss why your air conditioner might be leaking water inside your house and why you should consider hiring expert Brighton, MI geothermal heating and air conditioner services to address the problem before it gets worse.

Here’s Why You See Water Leaking From Your AC

Here’s a look at some of the reasons your air conditioner might be leaking water inside your house and what you can do to address the problem.

Clogged condensate drain

The condensate drain is responsible for taking out the water condensing on the coils inside your air conditioner and removing it. A clogged condensate drain will prevent the water from going anywhere else. The result is that the water will build up inside the condensate drain and start leaking inside the house. Check the condensate drain to see if it is being clogged by dirt or debris to remove it and fix the issue.

Broken condensate pump

The condensate pump is a small pump integrated into an air conditioner designed to pump the water accumulating inside the condensate pan and remove it. If the condensate pump isn’t working, the condensate pan will soon overflow (the pan is only about an inch deep). This will lead to water leaking inside the house.

Loose condensate drain

If your AC’s condensate drain is not clogged and the condensate pump is working, but the unit is still leaking water, there is a chance that the condensate drain isn’t properly connected. Even if your air conditioner was installed properly, it isn’t uncommon for the drain line to come loose or completely disconnect from the AC. When the condensate drain isn’t connected to your AC, it can cause water to leak inside your house.

Low refrigerant levels

If your air conditioner is low on refrigerant, it tends to cause the evaporator coil inside the unit to freeze up. When the coil comes back to a normal temperature, it melts the ice. The extra water created by the melting ice causes the drip pan in your air conditioner to overflow and leak water inside your house.
